Seven Sisters (1817)
Rosa multiflora platyphylla
An old rose shrouded in much debate over what is the true "Seven Sisters" rose a result of many nurseries selling several versions of the rose when it was popular in mid 1800's. This old rose was one painted by the famous painter of Old Roses, Redoute. Brought from China in the early 1800's. Seven Sisters is a collectors rose. It's large, rough, dull green leaves accompany the once blooming flowers that range in colours from deep carmine to pale pink through mauve, red and fade to lighter shades as blooms mature. Thus the name of the seven shades of colours. These colours appear all in one cluster. It's blooms are fragrant and about 3" round. In colder climates it has to be protected and does not make a climber as in warmer climates. We have to be satisfied with a gangly bush.It blooms on last years wood so you have to make sure some is left alive on the bush to get blooms the current year. Quite a lovely rose in full flush. Great magnitudes of flowers will cover it in mid June. Zone 5.
